The year 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America. It started tentatively as a small fort of approximately 150 persons on the James River and has grown as a milestone to become the United States of America and the foundation of our democracy. Thus, "Jamestowne Ancestors" provides a list of approximately 1,000 persons who are known (and documented) to have owned land or resided on Jamestown Island between 1607 and 1699. It also gives the individuals' dates, official positions, places of origin, or county of residence. The book includes the early history of the settlement with diagrams and maps of the expansion of the fort itself, of the city, and the archaeological work now in progress. The growth of the colony is shown in the development of the plantations, the shires, and the hundreds. Maps depict the formation and dates of the early counties and provide graphic images of where these settlers migrated and established their homes. The Vestry Book of Albemarle Parish is one of the priceless original records of the Old Dominion that has survived the vicissitudes of time, war, invasions, fire, and neglect. It is the last of the colonial vestry books to be made available to researchers and historians. It is now widely available in a printed, readable form because of the expertise and dedication of these two authors in transcribing this early Virginia handwriting. The colonial vestry books include the proceedings of the vestries of the Anglican Church of England, as well as the processioners' returns, marking the land ownership and boundaries of the lands. It begins on November 16, 1742, some four years after the formation of the parish (with some of the earliest pages missing) and runs to 1786.
