These Civil Appointments from the Executive Department are transcribed from the original notes and letters that have survived. They provide information of the lives and business of the residents of James City County. They are especially important where the county court records are not extant.

At a Court held for James City County March the 12th 1781
Edward Power & William Barrett Gent are by the Court recommended to his Excellency the Governor for one of them to be by him appointed Sherif of this county in the Room of Champion Travis Gent. who hath served his Years in that office

Ordered that Robert Nicolson Gent be recommended to his Excellency the Governor & honble Council as a proper Person to be added to the Commission of the Peace for this County
